Newest Smartphone Releases

Smartphone technology is changing quickly. Just as you obtain the latest and greatest, something new is introduced to the market. Cell phone providers and technology companies alike have to keep up with their competition, so the pressure to come up with something new is a constant.

With Christmas around the corner, what are the newest releases of smartphones and what is expected to be on the market?

1. Motorola Droid 2 Global with a 1.2 GHz Processor – Verizon has announced its release of the Droid 2 Global. Like the Droid 2, it is an Android OS smartphone with a large touchscreen and keyboard. Although the original Droid 2 came out in late summer, Motorola wasted no time in speeding it up and coming up with a new and improved version. The Global version and its 1.2 GHz processor make it the first smartphone on the market with this size of processor. In addition, its “Global” moniker means that it has the ability to make calls when roaming outside of the United States.

The Global version has GSM/HSPA network capability in addition to its CDMA/EV-DO. The Global version also runs on Android OS 2.2 and is a slider with a landscape-oriented keyboard. It also includes Wi-Fi and Stereo Bluetooth. It is able to share its 3G wireless Internet connection with other devices over Wi-Fi, thus making it a virtual hotspot. The Droid 2 Global also comes with 16 GB of storage capacity – 8 GB internally with the ability to hold an 8 GB microSD/SDHC memory card. The phone also has a 5 megapixel camera with a flash and a GPS receiver. While the standard Motorola Droid 2 hasn’t been discontinued, one can now purchase it at a very discounted price. As for the Motorola Droid 2 Global, you can pick it up for $ 200 with a two-year service contract and a $ 100 mail-in rebate – otherwise it will cost a cool $ 560.

2. Samsung Continuum Dual-Screen Smartphone – This phone will be released by Sumsung through Verizon in November 2010. The Continuum is an Android OS smartphone with two screens, one screen below the main one. The primary display is 3.4 inches in size (480×800 WVGA). It is a touchscreen while the smaller one is 1.8 inches in size and 96 x 480. Why the second display? This display is used for status updates including text messages, RSS feeds, weather and such. The Continuum will operate on Android OS 2.1 and will have a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor. It comes with 384 MB of RAM, 2 GB of internal storage with an 8 GB microSD memory card slot. The phone will be on Verizon’s voice and 3G data network. It comes with Wi-Fi, Stereo Bluetooth and a GPS receiver. Like all good smartphones, it will also include a camera – this one is a 5 megapixel and is auto-focus with a LED flash. It also supports 720p
video. The phone will sell for $ 200 with a service contract.

3. BlackBerry Torch 9800 – While this phone has been out a little longer than the above, there are new features to consider. First, AT&T did drop the price to an affordable $ 99, including the red and white versions. Plus, the new software OS for Torch 9800 users has been said to be leaked for download availability. BlackBerry isn’t making any guarantees on the new download yet until they release it officially, which should be soon.
