Soy and the Amazon

Soy is increasingly appearing in the headlines; for all the wrong reasons. Some have suggested that a diet heavy in soy products can cause all sorts of health problems – but doesn’t everything these days?

Supposed health issues aside; if you consume a lot of soy – and most of us do in some form as it’s added to so many products, have you asked yourself where it comes from?

Deforestation of the Amazon is something most of us are familiar with, but usually in relation to logging and cattle grazing. Did you know that Brazil is now one of the world’s largest exporters of soy beans? And guess where most of the crop comes from – the Amazon area. Over the 2005-2006 growing year, Brazil produced over 53.4 million tonnes of soybeans

In a double-whammy for meat eaters it also appears that one of the major uses for these soy beans is as feed for livestock. So whether you’re a vegetarian or omnivore; the chances are your diet consists to some extent of soy sourced from the Amazon.

While deforestation of the Amazon has decreased somewhat in recent years due to a drop in commodity pricing, including the price of soy beans; any further deforestation is just continuing the environmental disaster.

There’s no point in rejoicing too much over a 30%, 40% or even a 50% decrease in clearing in a year and allowing those responsible some breathing space; the destruction still continues of what is a rapidly diminishing resource. It needs to stop totally. Now. The pressure must be kept up – beware of rubbery figures.

Another monster looms on the horizon that could see the pace of Amazonian destruction increase again – biofuels. The yield of every soy bean is 80 percent meal and 20 percent oil.

I used to be so positive about the biofuel industry, but I’m fearful of where it may lead us in terms of other forms of environmental degradation. It’s part of the answer to some of our problems, sure, but it will lead us into a false sense of security that we can drive as much as we like and be “earth-friendly”. For example, the grain required to fill a 25-gallon SUV gas tank with ethanol could feed one person for a year.

Would you be happy filling your tank with a fuel that was sourced in part from the clearing of a rainforest or any sort of other natural forest?

Does the thought of your soy, in whatever form, perhaps coming from the Amazon disturb you?

It’s all food for thought.

  4. Ania says:

VGA front camera. Are you kidding me?

  5. Halo Games says:

I have the kindle fire HD 8. 7th generation this tablet is very high quality. I have had no issues with the Google play store and installing apps on it. Games, media and everything else runs excellent. My logic is all tablets do the same thing why would you spend over 300+ dollars to watch YouTube videos or play an app when you can get the same thing for 80% less?

  6. Movie matics says:

Also Google not being on this isn’t a major deal if you have Prime, Hulu, or Spotify. Plus if you have an Android phone you are set and most people who have iPhones probably would get the iPad instead.

  7. Samruddha save says:

Ohh! means amazon is becoming google type

  8. Not Royal Skyline says:

Excellent media consumption? No Netflix app, no Hulu or YouTube

  9. Kevin Curran says:

Can anyone tell me if you do the amazon FaceTime calling like on the echo show??

  10. Ian Applebaum says:

    Or get an iPad?!

  11. joel750 says:

I just bought the Amazon Fire 8 HD with Alexa this past Cyber Monday. I also have a Apple Ipad Air 2 I bought 2 years ago and it’s still pretty new. I ran them side by side and there’s no doubt that the Fire 8 HD is much much faster! If I only knew that this Amazon Fire 8 HD is a much better tablet, i shouldn’t bought that Ipad Air 2 and saved me about $720.00 which it could have been used somewhere else! I kinda regret buying that overhyped and overpriced Apple crap.

  12. TechXSoftware says:

Not sure if I want a tablet that’s on fire.

  13. Civic chick says:

The iPad is far superior, but Amazon Fire tablets will do in a pinch.

  18. Mike A says:

I got my pre-order a day ago , tried to side load Google Play and the required services and it caused the device to disable and enable Wifi every 3 seconds, basically rendering the device useless. Then I did a factory reset and tried to load the Google Chrome APK and it caused the device to reboot every 15 seconds, even on the factory reset screen it would keep rebooting. Basically bricked the device even after multiple factory resets.. Had to return it.

  19. Eric Doe says:

    iPad >

  20. joek money says:

  21. Koshy George says:

Can you side load the Google play store on it ?

  22. Lenny Buttz says:

Was this review or a commercial because you sure didn’t do much reviewing. I had an original Fire with the 6" screen and I loved it. This 10" one sucks. I hate alexa who came on during this video and told me she’s learning new stuff all the time. Good for her because it doesn’t seem like she knows very much. It’s so difficult for me to find anything in Amazon because it keeps begging me to sign up for Prime or the book reading deal or the movie deal or the music deal so I can enjoy all those things for "free" newsflash it’s not free if you’re paying for it.

  23. tallperson117 says:

You’d be better served just putting stock Android on it.

  24. Love to Hate says:

    OMG I JUST GOT THIS 4 XMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😄😄😄😄😄😄😄☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️😌😌😌😊🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓

  25. elchamber says:

I won’t buy it cause of the name of the thing. It’s crazy to use that as an excuse, but it’s mine.

  26. Svilen Konac says:

H@ watched this on asus 7hd in 2017

  27. ChyroBeast says:

Ehh. My Kindle fire hd 1 works fine

  28. 2012bigPerm says:

Why must all of these videos repeatedly use smart speaker wake words? Literally referenced several times in every video you guys post. BTW you post dozens of videos daily. Dozens.

  29. M4st3rm1nd says:

Why is there no YouTube app or MS Office app in the Amazon app store?

  30. Not Royal Skyline says:

Sorry never buy these, they are so slow. It can barely run videos at 60 FPS or run any app well. Don’t even think about playing a game on it

  31. Amad Clapham says:

    Did he say Electra?

  32. Christy Red says:

I just received it today. It doesn’t have a JAPANESE or CHINESE language.

  33. killafocker says:

    Good enough for porn

  34. Ala says:

Kindle fire is shit no google play and if you try to install android it gets bricked

  35. dora alcantara says:

  36. FastLikeUNO says:

Tablets in general are on a decline and denying it makes you look stuck in 2010.

  37. Jeff Smith says:

anyone know if this is faster than the kindle fire 8?

  38. Geo Layug says:

If only amazon sold fire tablets or echo devices in Canada.

  39. Robert LeBlanc says:

Would this and a stand be a better alternative to an Echo Show?

  40. raj rajah says:

    when start sale?

  41. C0PPERM0NK says:

This is more of an ad than a review.

  42. iApple OS says:

    Echo show alternative?

  44. Jon Shaffer says:

    where is the youtube app??!!

  45. Amrithanand says:

Why is everyone complaining about the lack of Google Apps? How hard could it be to side load it?

  46. Sha says:

224 PPI, Mediatek processor, an OS based on Android Lollipop. There are better options out there for the same price point. Lenovo P8 for instance has an 8 inch screen, Snapdragon SOC and runs Marshmellow and is exactly the same price. Plus you get full Google services.

  47. Jose Cerdeiras says:

Not bad i might order it since i use echo and fire tv at home this would be perfect on the go

  48. GSMArena New says:

    Good Review!

  49. Stephanie S says:

Would this tablet be good for taking online college classes? Not in IT or anything like that

  50. JazzMati says:

This might be a dumb question but can you load .pdf archives with a micro sd on this tablet and read them with no problem?
